Friday Five #4
It's that time of the week again. Time for the Friday Five!!!
1. What's your favorite vacation spot?
I would have to say my favorite vacation spot is my families cottage in South River, Ontario. It is a 4 1/2 hour drive to get to it but it is well worth the wait. It is on Eagle Lake. You open the front door and the lake is right in front of you. Most of the summer it is completely quiet (except on the weekends when everyone and their dog decided to power boat and seadoo on the lake). The only problem with the cottage is that all the fresh air tends to tire you out so you end up going to bed relatively early.
2. Where do you consider to be the biggest hell-hole on earth?
Philadelphia. I went there with my parents for a conference when I was 14 or 15. We stayed in the downtown area about 6 or 7 blocks from the Liberty Bell. Two blocks away from our hotel in most directions you would entered run-down ghetto areas. My parents van was stolen from the hotel valet parking lot. We eventually got it back but the town left a bad taste in my mouth. City of brotherly love my ass! :)
3. What would be your dream vacation?
Well if I had a significant other I think it would be to rent a large penthouse suite with room service (which would bring anything we desired) and spend the time doing whatever we want. Since I'm single I think travelling around Europe with friends would be fantastic. I did it two years ago with a German friend and one of my current housemates and it was a great time.
4. If you could go on a road-trip with anyone, who would it be and why?
Out of the people that I know personally I would have to pick Matt (aka SMooSh) for a couple of reasons. The first being we can handle each other, we can both annoy each other but we both know it's all for fun. Second he doesn't mind driving in new and exciting situations and places. Thirdly we don't always have to talk, we can have comfortable silences. Out of the people I only know online I would have to pick Firda. Why? Because she has a huge desire to travel but doesn't have the chance. If I was rich I would fly her to Canada and we would go on many roadtrips. And don't worry Wari and Nita. If I was rich I would fly you two over as well :)
5. What are your plans for this weekend?
I think I am going to go back to home home (aka my parents house) for the weekend and hang out with some friends and family. Probably end up watching a lot of movies and reading a bunch. I love the weekend.
Delicatessen
I just got back from a friends place where we watched Delicatessen. The director of the movie Jean-Pierre Jeunet who also directed Amelie and Alien:Resurrection (also known as Alien 4).
The movie was fantastic. Much like Amelie but in a black comedy sort of way. The main plot of the story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where food is scarce since very little can grow. Louison is an ex-circus performer who ends up taking a job working as a apartment building handyman for a "butcher". Since food is scarce some people have turned to canibalism. It turns out that the "butcher" actually hires handymen and ends up killing them to feed to his apartment tenants but during Louisons stay the "butcher"s daughter falls in love with him and the rest of the story is her attempts to save Louison from her fathers cutting board.
The style of the film is similar to Amelie but the story is much darker. I would actually classify it as a "dark comedy romance". Some of it reminded me of the movie Brazil but it made more sense than Brazil. Highly enjoyable. Well worth a rental.
