Men With Brooms

Friday  •  11:25 PM

Last night myself and a couple other graduate students I work with went to see the movie Men With Brooms. Most of you out there in "Blue Goo" reader land have probably never heard of this movie. The reason why you've never heard of it is due to the fact that it's a Canadian movie and it's all about curling. I've talked a lot about curling lately since I've played it twice this winter which is more than I've ever played it before. The movie was pretty good. It contained a lot of Canadiana which brought back memories. Specifically when they showed the start of a "Hinterland Who's Who" which most Canadians will remember from seeing on CBC usually before or after Sesame Street during the day.

So in conclusion my verdict on this movie is that if you are a Canadian you will definitely like it. And if you aren't Canadian you might still enjoy it if you can understand curling. They actually explain the game quite nicely at one point in the movie. There is a lot of beautiful Northern Canadian scenery throughout the movie as well. There are also tonnes and tonnes of beavers in the movie (no no, the animal you pervert!).

I don't really think I could ever get paid to write movie reviews. I suck :)

'NSync In Space

I hope if he gets the chance to go into space with the Russians they forget to bring him back or accidentally shoot him into the sun!

Goodbye Search Engine Freedom of Speech

Apparently freedom of speech means nothing to Google or the Church of Scientology. The Church of Scientology have threatened Google with a lawsuit if they don't remove certain Anti-Scientology web links. They have targeted one website in particular, an Operation Clambake, which has published secret Scientology religious texts and internal church documents. The full CBC news report can be found here and Operation Clambakes coverage of this can be found here.

I've always respected Googles views and buisness practices but because of this my respect for the company has decreased.

Addiction

I wrote an entry a couple of days ago about my new vinyl addiction. I've come to the conclusion that I am not addicted specifically to vinyl (records that is). I'm addicted to information and the media.

I have more books than I can probably read in my lifetime. I have more CD's than normal human beings do. I've bought dozens of records in the past 2 weeks and listened to maybe a dozen of them. I have many many MP3's and movie files on my computer. More than I have time to watch. I own movies I haven't even watched yet, but plan to at some point. I just love the media and I love the information I can learn from the media.

I don't think it is an unhealthy addiction. I don't spend every waking hour on the internet, even though it may seem that way sometimes. I do have an offline life. It's not very exciting but it does exist. So I don't think it's a bad addiction.

Friday Five #7

This weeks installment of the Friday Five:

1. What is your favorite time of year?
I would have to say Fall is my favorite season, then Spring. Winter and Summer suck equally. One is too cold and the other is usually too hot. The only good thing about the summer is my cottage (as I mentioned a while ago).

2. What is it about your favorite season that, well, makes it your favorite season?
The leaves changing colour (specifically when we go up to the cottage to close it for the winter), starting to wear sweaters but not having to wear a coat, the fact that it may be cold but the sun still comes out, the days slowly getting shorter and shorter and those Indian Summer days where it is warm outside and you just want to lay in a pile of leaves and watch the clouds drift by.

3. What is your least favorite time of year? Why?
I dislike the middle of summer when the humidity is way to high for anyone to want to be alive. And I don't really like blizzard type during the winter. Actually I do like it when I don't have to go out in it.

4. Do you do anything to celebrate or recognize the changing of seasons?
Other than changing the clocks for Daylight Savings Time (Spring forward and Fall behind). In Canada we tend to live day to day, one day it may be t-shirt weather where the next day a blizzard may be swirling around outside. Especially during the winter :)

5. What's your favorite thing to do outside?
I took up mountain biking last year, until I broke my wrist. I will be getting back into that when the weather is a little nicer. I really have to say my favorite thing to do outside is boating. Be it paddleboating, canoeing, kayaking (which I've never really done but would like to) or motorboating it's always a good time.

And thus completes Friday Five for this week. :)
