The Long Long Long Weekend

Monday  •  12:15 PM

To start off I should wish all Canadians a happy "belated" Canada Day. I should have posted on Friday but I was too lazy.

This weekend was a long weekend, much like it is from our American neighbors. Though we got Friday off instead of today.

Quick summary of what Firda and I did this weekend.

Friday: Slept in until 9:00 or so. Had a nice lazy morning. I played video games, while Firda worked/played on the computer. We went out for lunch at Pizza Hut around 2:00 pm or so. Following food we went over to the University of Waterloo, where they have an all-day Canada day celebration. We spent most of our time there wandering around. Firda has some pictures from the day on her Flickr account. Just before we left to go back to the apartment (around 5:00) I noticed that Robert Munsch was on the stage telling stories, so we sat down and listened to him for a half hour. For those of you who don't know Robert Munsch, he is a relatively famous Canadian children’s book writer and when he tells his stories he really gets into it.

After Mr. Munsch we went back to the apartment, since it was getting chilly and also looked like it was going to rain. It did rain but things cleared up for the fireworks that night. We headed back to the University for the firework show. We feared they might have to cancel the fireworks since it was getting pretty windy, but luckily everything went off with a "bang" (pun intended). I think Firda took some really cool pictures of the fireworks but I haven't seen them yet. Following the fireworks we headed down to my parents place, where we spent the rest of the weekend (see below). Point of interest - when we were driving home the temperature was 9 degrees Celsius.

Saturday: An early start on the day for us. We heading out to the Dunville book sale, which I've mentioned here before, but before arriving we stopped at a bunch of garage sales. I picked up a bunch of books (full series of the Narnia chronicles, a big book of Richard Scarry stories etc.) and some records (Parliament Live, two Beatles albums [Yesterday and Today, Revolver], Richard Pryor's greatest hits, Steven Wright, Sam Kinison and some Louis Armstrong). Firda got an old 1970ish Cosina/Argus SLR camera (with four lenses) and an old Minolta camera, which I don't know much about. The book sale was pretty much a bust. We left with 10 books. Nothing to exciting.

That night we went into Brantford with our friend Joe to visit our other friends Tom and Allison, and their friend Sarah. We sat around, chatted, and played an old card game called Pit (linked to the game instructions). As the instructions mention it is
"based on the exciting scenes of the American Corn Exchange". It sounds lame but it's actually a lot of fun. Very loud and frantic.

We got home around 1:30 and passed off to dreamland soon after.

Sunday: Firda woke up at 6:30. I woke up around 8:30. Joined Joe, Tom and Allison for breakfast in Waterford. Invited them all out to my parents place for a swim and Bar-B-Q later that day. Allison brought her 5 year old daughter, S.D., out to swim and eat. We spent the whole afternoon swimming and then finished it with a great Bar-B-Q. I spent most of the afternoon harassing and chasing after the little one, though I know she liked it. Everyone left around 8:00. Firda and I cleaned up my parent’s house. We got back to Waterloo just after 10 and were in bed by 11:00.

I'm sore (mostly from yesterday) and tired (from the whole weekend), but I also had a fantastic weekend. I know Firda did as well. I just hope I can catch up on my sleep sometime soon :)
